Abcess
Q: My dog has an abcess on back, the size of a baseball. it is filled with fliud. i was advised to keep it drained, wound scabs to quickly from the inside, any suggestions on how to continue care please advise, dog is on amoxcillan 500mg 2xs a day.
A: Use warm compresses for 10 minutes at a time several times daily to try and keep it open and draining. if fills back up take back to vet to have lanced and possible drain put into wound

Ticks
Q: We live in the northeast (lyme disease) and we will be applying frontline plus next week. but our lab/boxer mix dog already had 2 ticks (white) on him. it took us two days of trying to pull it off with tweezors and my husband's arm muscle and we finally were successful. others have said they should come off with one pull of the tweezor. this took two days of pulling (poor alvin). any advice of an easier way to get them off. it is still snowing here so our vet thinks it is too soon for the frontline.
A: One quick pull with tweezers is usually suffice. if leave head in , it will eventually fall out

Side effects of deramax
Q: I have a lhasa apso who is 15 years old. he was started on deramax approximately 1 1/2 months ago for signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. since about 1 month ago, his has lost his appetite and will not eat his dry food, which he used to love to eat. i am having a hard time getting him to eat. he will only take "mighty dog" once it is warmed slightly, and will only eat a small portion of it. he is losing weight. is loss of appetite an adverse reaction to deramax? in the meantime, i am giving him a multi-vitamin to help supplement him. do you have any suggestions to help me get him to eat his food again? i am planning to stop the medication temporarily to see if his appetite returns. thanks, louise, rn, nurse practitioner
A: It is possible that this is due to the medication. i would contact your veterinarian.

Tablet form?
Q: Is there a tablet form for flea and tick? i use frontline plus but it is a battle to get it on my dog. she runs and hides in the opposite direction as soon as she sees the package or smells the product.
A: Your might want to consider using a product called sentinel. it will protect against heartworm and fleas. in addition you would use a tick repellant collar.
Shop for: tick, sentinel, frontline plus

Ask to watch dog
Q: I was asked to care for a dog that was diagnosed with whipworm about 1 month ago- she is still being treated but her stool sample showed no worms is it safe to care for her i have two dogs of my own and dont want to put them at risk. the dog that has the worms has been treated for about a month- but is not done treatment yet-but stool was negative. thanks
A: Should be ok but i would have all dogs on monthly interceptor which not only prevents heartworms but controls and prevents whipworms which are very hard to get rid of in environment. available at 1800petmeds
Shop for: 1800petmeds, interceptor

Tape worms
Q: We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. the cats are never outside. 2 of the dogs have been around a dog that very possibly has fleas and lives with 7 or so other cats. this "other" dog also likes to catch mice. our dogs have been known to eat droppings in the litter box, however, we also have corrected that with a new type of box and a gate on the room it is in so the dogs can't get to it, but the cats can. our groomer found tapeworms in one of the dogs 2 times now and both times we immediately treated all of our animals. since the last treatment we have not had our pets around this other dog. ok, now the real questions, how do they get tapeworms? what do you think we should do.
A: Tapeworms are gotten from ingesting fleas that carry them or ingesting stool from pet who is shedding tapewormsegments. as long as not seeing any tape segments, i would not worry
