Swollen eye membraneQ: My sister-in-laws dog, jack, has an eye irratation that has caused the membrane in the eye next to the nose to swell and become red. she's been told that she can use the medicine that is used for pink eye for kids to help with this. it doesn't seem to be doing anything. we were wondering if using this medication is even a good idea since it's made for humans. what should she do? thanks. bev A: I would see vet asap for eye exam and true diagnosis ofproblem. can see article i wrote on eye care on education part of this website for some helpful suggestions as well
AnxietyQ: My sons 8 yr old dog is constantly wining. he's other wise content, and very loveable. at home you could be sitting watching tv, and he'll lay at your feet and wine. has always been this way, but seems to be getting worse lately. vet has recommanded prozac, but because of the cost, it is out of the question. what can you suggest. thank you, A: I would try some natural flower essences from health food store such as rescue remedy which can be used safely long term with no side effects. there is also cheaper meds such as amitryptylline which your vet can prescribe if anxiety a big issue
Bladder stonesQ: My 3 yr old cat had a stone in his bladder. the vet hosp. had him in the hosp for 3 days giving him some medication to disolve the stone. after that he was on a type of food that continued to disolve the stone for about a month. he has to have prescription canned and dry food from now on to prevent the reocurrance of the problem. it is hill's prescription diet, feline c/d (4 lb bag - dry) and canned in a 5 1/2 oz. can. do you sell this? it seems expensive. $11 for the bag and $1/ can. A: I'm sorry about your cat's problem. unfortunately we do not carry pet foods.
Side effects of deramaxQ: I have a lhasa apso who is 15 years old. he was started on deramax approximately 1 1/2 months ago for signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. since about 1 month ago, his has lost his appetite and will not eat his dry food, which he used to love to eat. i am having a hard time getting him to eat. he will only take "mighty dog" once it is warmed slightly, and will only eat a small portion of it. he is losing weight. is loss of appetite an adverse reaction to deramax? in the meantime, i am giving him a multi-vitamin to help supplement him. do you have any suggestions to help me get him to eat his food again? i am planning to stop the medication temporarily to see if his appetite returns. thanks, louise, rn, nurse practitioner A: It is possible that this is due to the medication. i would contact your veterinarian.
