Nearly 11 year old german shepherd
Q: He is healthy;other than what i thought was spinal arthritis;but i am not sure because when i called the vet's again about him being able to walk in;getting up on his own;but he never walked out ;has not walked since;4 months ago now;was told at the time i picked him up they gave him more anesthesia than they wanted to;also he was given a sedative by injection;he had a hard time recovering from the anesthesia;i still don't think he should of completely loss the use of his back legs; he was still walking when he went there; i feel like i made a big mistake letting him get xrays; the vet said he does not recall saying about too much anesthesia; went for xrays; they said he is old anyway; but i was yelled the word massive lumbo-sacral , so is this different than spinal arthritis;he is a great dog under control with any pain ;i just don't think he should of completely loss the use of his legs in a few hours; i am on my own with him now; the thing that was said to me is to call when i am ready to put him down as he is old anyway;that was it; i wanted him looked at again by another vet;but was turned down flat;i also did'nt know vets really don't like older dogs;because they say he's old anyway, alot of them are put down when healthy;also i have come to think they don't like german shepherds at least where i have been, why so much anesthesia + sedating to do xrays;it was way too much on him;he was xrayed before over 2 years ago with no problem; but they did'nt use anesthesia or a sedative on him ;he is very active or wants to be now ;limber also except for not being able to walk; i just want to know why he walked in but never walked out ;i think he was mishandled ;they were nervous about him;i have owned him since he was a pup;now i don't know what to do. thank you
A: Your shephard likely had pre existing spinal disease in first place either a disc problem or a degenerative disease called degenerative myelopathy. i would see a veterinary neurologist or seek out an alternative chiropractic or acupuncture vet at www.altvetmed.com or www.theavh.org

Prednisone
Q: My dog is 17 a golden 2 years ago he had a stroke and the give him prednisone what is this for?
A: Pred can be used to treat inflammation or edema with certain brain disorders, however its randolm use in so called strokes is not medically indicated in most cases
Shop for: prednisone

Anxiety
Q: My sons 8 yr old dog is constantly wining. he's other wise content, and very loveable. at home you could be sitting watching tv, and he'll lay at your feet and wine. has always been this way, but seems to be getting worse lately. vet has recommanded prozac, but because of the cost, it is out of the question. what can you suggest. thank you,
A: I would try some natural flower essences from health food store such as rescue remedy which can be used safely long term with no side effects. there is also cheaper meds such as amitryptylline which your vet can prescribe if anxiety a big issue

Kennel cough
Q: Is there any way to get rid of kennel cough without seeing a vet for those who can not aford to take there dog to the vet?
A: You can try childrens robitussin as needed a few teaspoons at a time depending upon size of dog(1 teaspoon for small ones) can also try echinacea and goldenseal from health food store which boosts immune system as well as giving extra vitamin c in form of ester c
Shop for: vitamin

Swollen eye membrane
Q: My sister-in-laws dog, jack, has an eye irratation that has caused the membrane in the eye next to the nose to swell and become red. she's been told that she can use the medicine that is used for pink eye for kids to help with this. it doesn't seem to be doing anything. we were wondering if using this medication is even a good idea since it's made for humans. what should she do? thanks. bev
A: I would see vet asap for eye exam and true diagnosis ofproblem. can see article i wrote on eye care on education part of this website for some helpful suggestions as well

Using advantage and adam's flea spray together
Q: My dog is on advantage, however, she is still scratching and obviously this does not do the trick completely. is it okay to use adams flea and tick spray (which i have had at least a couple of years, so i hope it is still good...) even though the adv. is still in her system? thank you!
A: There would be a danger of overdosing your pet. you might want to add a flea and tick collar.
Shop for: tick, advantage

Accidents
Q: My 6yo pom/spitz mix has been peeing in the house quite frequently. i took her to the vet and she did not have an infection although they gave her 2wks of antbx. we were told it could be because she has not been spayed. is that a possiblilty?
A: It is possibly hormonal but i would try and see if any bladder stones present by taking x rays. also is your dog leaking urine or incontinent? i.e leaking in sleep. if so, spaying can worsen that problem

Droncit -tape worm
Q: I have a large male dog 14+ years old (chico) and he is quite feeble and is ailing. fleas are a problem. i normally and routinely give all my animals (3 cats & two dogs)droncit at least annually. if i see evidence of tape worms then i re-treat as necessary but not more than twice a year. i control fleas as best i can using sentinel for the dogs. i have administered sentinal to chico but am wary of the droncit. i have seen no evidence of tape worms and feel unless i do it's better to forgo the treatment. please advise if i'm on track, also advise consequences of sentinel for chico. also if i do find evidence of tapeworms should a risk the droncit? txs. jane hilsabeck
A: Droncit is very safe drug so i would not worry
Shop for: droncit, sentinel
