Using advantage and adam's flea spray together
Q: My dog is on advantage, however, she is still scratching and obviously this does not do the trick completely. is it okay to use adams flea and tick spray (which i have had at least a couple of years, so i hope it is still good...) even though the adv. is still in her system? thank you!
A: There would be a danger of overdosing your pet. you might want to add a flea and tick collar.
Shop for: tick, advantage

Shaking??
Q: About 3 months ago i took my dog to the groomers for a bath. i have a mutt (shepard mix) about 7 years old. ever since then she constantly shakes her head. i thought maybe she had water in her ears or an ear infection but there is no smell. if it is water wouldn't it have come out already. what cold this be from?? what can i do??
A: Likely underyling allergies either inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies which causes head shaking, paw licking excessively in some cases, etc. go to vet to sort out

My dog is losing hair!!!!!!!
Q: It has been at least 2months when she started losing her hair. she has spots all over her skin with no hair on it. i don't know what to do. could you please help me?
A: Needs diagnostic workup for hair loss including skin scrape, fungal culture, as well as possible skin biopsy if necessary to get to diagnosis and treatment.

Cushings disease
Q: My dog patch has just been tested for cushings, his tests revealed an 19.5. my vet said she would not treat unless that level was 20. i would like to know if there was anything i could get over the counter to give him some pep or to help with his panting. he was a rescue that we have had for four years and we think he is about six or seven years old. he weighs 75 lbs. thanks, in advance for your help.
A: Dogs can pant for lots of reasons from being heat intolorant(as this is way they sweat) to pain, to many others. have to address underyling cause of panting to make suggestion.

Skin care
Q: My blk. lab has white flaky skin and it looks like dandruff also once a year she gets an allergy from mold in the fall and it starts in the tail area and spreads to the back ,they are sores with hair loss my vet will no longer give her prednisone . she is 11 yrs. old and starting to scratch her undr belly and getting a sore at the base of her tail ..is their anything i can get without prescription. i'm 80 years old and can no longer lift an 85 pound dog into my suv as she is to old to leap in and everytime i take to my vet he charges over 150.00 to 200.00 and i am on afixed income can you help??? thanks
A: Try giving you dog diphenhydramine (benadryl) 3 of the 25mg tablets 2 or 3 times daily. you can purchase them from us very inexpensively and it does not require a prescription.
Shop for: prednisone

Skin tags
Q: My dog has skin tags on the back of her front legs they have been there for a while they dont seem to bother her so i havent worried about them today i noticed swelling in one and was wondering is there anyway to get rid of them?
A: Only way definitively is to have them removed. you could also seek out homeopathic vet www.theavh.org who can possibly address issue
Shop for: homeo

Side effects of deramax
Q: I have a lhasa apso who is 15 years old. he was started on deramax approximately 1 1/2 months ago for signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. since about 1 month ago, his has lost his appetite and will not eat his dry food, which he used to love to eat. i am having a hard time getting him to eat. he will only take "mighty dog" once it is warmed slightly, and will only eat a small portion of it. he is losing weight. is loss of appetite an adverse reaction to deramax? in the meantime, i am giving him a multi-vitamin to help supplement him. do you have any suggestions to help me get him to eat his food again? i am planning to stop the medication temporarily to see if his appetite returns. thanks, louise, rn, nurse practitioner
A: It is possible that this is due to the medication. i would contact your veterinarian.
