Ticks
Q: We live in the northeast (lyme disease) and we will be applying frontline plus next week. but our lab/boxer mix dog already had 2 ticks (white) on him. it took us two days of trying to pull it off with tweezors and my husband's arm muscle and we finally were successful. others have said they should come off with one pull of the tweezor. this took two days of pulling (poor alvin). any advice of an easier way to get them off. it is still snowing here so our vet thinks it is too soon for the frontline.
A: One quick pull with tweezers is usually suffice. if leave head in , it will eventually fall out

Extremly itchy skin on my dog
Q: My shepard is very full of energy and life, but there are times she has to stop and scratch, she has scratced so bad she has made her teets bleed, is she not getting enough oil in her dry food or is it an allergy, because my vet told me to give her 2 benadryl daily because she is prone to ear infections. she is almost 3 years old and weighs 80 lbs.
A: It could be an allergy and adding an oil like flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily to her food could help but long term. you could try other antihistamines, which may or may not help. you may ultimately need low doses of cortisone for acute relief of the itching or consider allergy testing for what she is allergic to for best long term relief.
Shop for: antihistamine

Heartworm injection
Q: I understand that the heartguard shot has been recalled, please tell me why and what does it do to a dog that has been taking it. thank you, betty bell
A: There had been reported an unusually large number of adverse reaction to the proheart, so the product was withdrawn for further studies by the manufacturer.|at this point, there is no reason to believe that an animal who received the shot without incident is in any danger.

Misdiagnosis of cushings
Q: First i would like to say thank you for all of your help!!!!! this time i do not have a question but before receiving your response to my second question (you suggested an internist) i got a second opinion from another vet we used to use. he absolutely stated that based on the blood and urine tests there shows no signs of cushings at all. he believes my dog has seasonal allergies and we are trying prednisone to relieve her discomfort. if not seasonal, he thinks food or scabes (spelling) which could be accurate due to the fact that she recently spent time at a kennel. i just wanted to let people know that a second opinion is always good. i almost had to make the ultimate decision of long term debt to treat her or saying goodbye. i am glad that i spent another $100 to not have to make that decision.
A: Your very welcome. glad to be of some help to you. pass your comments etc on to 1800petmeds brass.

Prednisone
Q: My dog is 17 a golden 2 years ago he had a stroke and the give him prednisone what is this for?
A: Pred can be used to treat inflammation or edema with certain brain disorders, however its randolm use in so called strokes is not medically indicated in most cases
Shop for: prednisone

Acidity in urine
Q: I have a 2 year old maltese that had an urine analysis. his vet says his acidity is too high in his urine, but he has no crystals (which is good). we have been tring different foods to lower his acidity. he has become a picky eater, and he is holding his urine. he only potty once or twice a day, and it lasts a long time. i am worried he is suffering. is there anything to help him? thanks!
A: I dont change dogs diets based on urine ph if no symptoms. i simply stress all natural diets such as pet guard or wellness brands and in this breed might want to consider home made diet as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, dvm, phd, who knows much more about nutrition than most vets given above background

Eye infections
Q: My dogs seem to both be suffering from the same thing..both of them are having what looks like an eye infection or virus of some kind..they both have red and runny eyes..what causes this and what is the treatment for it?
A: Eye infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria. the treatment can vary depending on the cause of the infection. you should have the pet's eyes examined by a veterinarian.

Side effects of deramax
Q: I have a lhasa apso who is 15 years old. he was started on deramax approximately 1 1/2 months ago for signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. since about 1 month ago, his has lost his appetite and will not eat his dry food, which he used to love to eat. i am having a hard time getting him to eat. he will only take "mighty dog" once it is warmed slightly, and will only eat a small portion of it. he is losing weight. is loss of appetite an adverse reaction to deramax? in the meantime, i am giving him a multi-vitamin to help supplement him. do you have any suggestions to help me get him to eat his food again? i am planning to stop the medication temporarily to see if his appetite returns. thanks, louise, rn, nurse practitioner
A: It is possible that this is due to the medication. i would contact your veterinarian.
