Food
Q: I have a 1 year old westie. he turns his nose up at dog food. i have tried every dogfood imaginable and he hasnt liked anything. i tried mixing our table food into the dog food he picks out only the table food and leaves the dog food. what should i do? he readily takes dog treats though.
A: Try home made diet such as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, dvm which is superior way to feed dogs anway.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
Q: Hello, my dog was just diagnosed with epi. the price for the medicine is $77 for a 4 ounce package. i looked online and found out that we can also give him a human suppliment called lipram or panzytrat as well. have you heard of anyone that has done this to treat epi on their dog? thanks.
A: The concentration of enzymes is different in the veterinary product than it is in the human product (lipram). i would not suggest making a change since your pet will probably not get the required dosage.

Misdiagnosis of cushings
Q: First i would like to say thank you for all of your help!!!!! this time i do not have a question but before receiving your response to my second question (you suggested an internist) i got a second opinion from another vet we used to use. he absolutely stated that based on the blood and urine tests there shows no signs of cushings at all. he believes my dog has seasonal allergies and we are trying prednisone to relieve her discomfort. if not seasonal, he thinks food or scabes (spelling) which could be accurate due to the fact that she recently spent time at a kennel. i just wanted to let people know that a second opinion is always good. i almost had to make the ultimate decision of long term debt to treat her or saying goodbye. i am glad that i spent another $100 to not have to make that decision.
A: Your very welcome. glad to be of some help to you. pass your comments etc on to 1800petmeds brass.

Anxiety
Q: My sons 8 yr old dog is constantly wining. he's other wise content, and very loveable. at home you could be sitting watching tv, and he'll lay at your feet and wine. has always been this way, but seems to be getting worse lately. vet has recommanded prozac, but because of the cost, it is out of the question. what can you suggest. thank you,
A: I would try some natural flower essences from health food store such as rescue remedy which can be used safely long term with no side effects. there is also cheaper meds such as amitryptylline which your vet can prescribe if anxiety a big issue

Weights
Q: I want to use frontline plus, but i only saw medicicne for dogs 11 pounds and up and my puppy is 9 and a half pounds, could i use the medicine for the lowest weight catagory or find something else? does it come in a dose for smaller dogs perhaps only available at the vet?
A: I think 11 pound dose would be fine. for further dose questions ask 1800petmeds pharmacist
Shop for: 1800petmeds, frontline plus, frontline

Demodex
Q: I started treatment that the vet suggested and my dog got worse. i discontined his treatment and the dog got better. how do i treat demodex?
A: You might have seen an inflamatory reaction as the mites were dying. sometimes they look worse for a while, then look better. i suggest you stick with the treatment your veterinarian recommended. i use a dip containing amitraz. ivermectin can also be used.

Extremly itchy skin on my dog
Q: My shepard is very full of energy and life, but there are times she has to stop and scratch, she has scratced so bad she has made her teets bleed, is she not getting enough oil in her dry food or is it an allergy, because my vet told me to give her 2 benadryl daily because she is prone to ear infections. she is almost 3 years old and weighs 80 lbs.
A: It could be an allergy and adding an oil like flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily to her food could help but long term. you could try other antihistamines, which may or may not help. you may ultimately need low doses of cortisone for acute relief of the itching or consider allergy testing for what she is allergic to for best long term relief.
Shop for: antihistamine

Heartworm injection
Q: I understand that the heartguard shot has been recalled, please tell me why and what does it do to a dog that has been taking it. thank you, betty bell
A: There had been reported an unusually large number of adverse reaction to the proheart, so the product was withdrawn for further studies by the manufacturer.|at this point, there is no reason to believe that an animal who received the shot without incident is in any danger.

Poop
Q: I have two 5 month old puppies who insist on eatting their pooh.. i have tried deter, sep, tobasco sauce, bitter apple, yelling at the pooh (not the doggies)...this habit has to be breakable..any other advise on how to stop it?
A: Noit really. try good supplement like missing link from designing health

Which intercepter
Q: My dog is about 60 lbs. he uses intercepter but my vet gives it to us on a card not a box. how do i know which one to order from you? karen
A: You would use the interceptor "white" which is for dogs 51 - 100 pounds.
