Eye infectionsQ: My dogs seem to both be suffering from the same thing..both of them are having what looks like an eye infection or virus of some kind..they both have red and runny eyes..what causes this and what is the treatment for it? A: Eye infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria. the treatment can vary depending on the cause of the infection. you should have the pet's eyes examined by a veterinarian.
Bladder stonesQ: My 3 yr old cat had a stone in his bladder. the vet hosp. had him in the hosp for 3 days giving him some medication to disolve the stone. after that he was on a type of food that continued to disolve the stone for about a month. he has to have prescription canned and dry food from now on to prevent the reocurrance of the problem. it is hill's prescription diet, feline c/d (4 lb bag - dry) and canned in a 5 1/2 oz. can. do you sell this? it seems expensive. $11 for the bag and $1/ can. A: I'm sorry about your cat's problem. unfortunately we do not carry pet foods.
FleasQ: Can i use advantage on my dog after using frontline? the frontline is not killing the fleas. A: You can use the sentinel tablets along with the frontline.

DosageQ: We gave our polish lowland sheepdog his monthly dose of heartgard and about 6 hours later he vomited. (he had been taking an antibiotic for another reason, and this had been causing some gi distressl). should we consider redosing him in a few days or just skip this month? A: I would just skip this month. there is a safety factor in heartguard so dont worry

Separation anxietyQ: The vet has started our 15 yr old dog on clomipramine 5 mg bid x 2 weeks then 10 mg bid for a total of 20 mg qd. the dog is 12 1/2 #. since the 5 mg capsules are so expensive, when we get to the increased dosage can he have it all at once, is it timed release or would 25 mg not work for his size. 5 mg is 3 times the amount and pet meds does not even carry 5 mg or any tablets only capsules. thanks A: There is only a small difference between the 20 mg tablet and the 25 mg capsule but the vet would have to authorize it. it is not a time release product and depending on the effect desired whether or not you can use a once a day dosing. we do have people giving 1/2 capsule dosing.
Acidity in urineQ: I have a 2 year old maltese that had an urine analysis. his vet says his acidity is too high in his urine, but he has no crystals (which is good). we have been tring different foods to lower his acidity. he has become a picky eater, and he is holding his urine. he only potty once or twice a day, and it lasts a long time. i am worried he is suffering. is there anything to help him? thanks! A: I dont change dogs diets based on urine ph if no symptoms. i simply stress all natural diets such as pet guard or wellness brands and in this breed might want to consider home made diet as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, dvm, phd, who knows much more about nutrition than most vets given above background
ScratchingQ: My dog is constantly scratching. i have try flea spray, the hartz flea and tick medicine that you put down his back and he is still doing it. i have also treated the carpets and his room. A: You can treat the allergy symptoms with diphenhydramine (benadryl). give 1mg per lb every 8 to 12 hours.
