Smelly dog after being outsideQ: My golden smells bad after being outside. i only let her out to relive herself. i live in florida and is is very humid and hot here so it is almost as if she is sweating this odor. i had a jack russel that died recently and he never had this problem but my friends black lab does. she dosent scratch, have sores, bad breath, or anything, just this stench after being outside. i've noticed that you suggest a diet change and was wondering why you suggest the flaxseed oil and such? could this be the problem? A: When i hear about body odor issues, etc without visually external skin lesions or ear problems, then i often suspect dietary issues or sensitivities as poor digestion, etc has been linked with all sorts of systemic problem. think of a person who is sensitive to garlic who if eats a little garlic, will exude it right through their skin. however if your dog only smells after being outside in a particular area, then perhaps she is being exposed to some sort of chemical on lawns she is allergic to or perhaps inhalent allergens which actually flax seed oil might help. but usually allergies cause some sort of itching which is why if pets not itchy, then i start with better diets, supplements, etc

Acidity in urineQ: I have a 2 year old maltese that had an urine analysis. his vet says his acidity is too high in his urine, but he has no crystals (which is good). we have been tring different foods to lower his acidity. he has become a picky eater, and he is holding his urine. he only potty once or twice a day, and it lasts a long time. i am worried he is suffering. is there anything to help him? thanks! A: I dont change dogs diets based on urine ph if no symptoms. i simply stress all natural diets such as pet guard or wellness brands and in this breed might want to consider home made diet as described in book dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn, dvm, phd, who knows much more about nutrition than most vets given above background
Bladder stonesQ: My 3 yr old cat had a stone in his bladder. the vet hosp. had him in the hosp for 3 days giving him some medication to disolve the stone. after that he was on a type of food that continued to disolve the stone for about a month. he has to have prescription canned and dry food from now on to prevent the reocurrance of the problem. it is hill's prescription diet, feline c/d (4 lb bag - dry) and canned in a 5 1/2 oz. can. do you sell this? it seems expensive. $11 for the bag and $1/ can. A: I'm sorry about your cat's problem. unfortunately we do not carry pet foods.
Loss of badder control with ageQ: Hi! my mom took in a stray dog awhile ago. i would say that the dog is a collie mix, or maybe pure collie. it is about 8 years old. she is having a bladder control issue, she wets the bed. this only occurs while she is sleeping and she is very displeased that "some other dog" came in and wet on her bed while she was sleeping. she is soooo sweet and very smart. is there anything we can do please help. also if you can recommend some medication that would be great. she has arthritis and a small heart mummer. A: Have urine checked by vet for infection. if none present, then ask for drug called phenylproponolamine which can help with urine incontinence
6 year old german sheppard right hind legQ: Ever since our german sheppard was attacked by another german sheppard last summer, he has had problems with his right hind leg. he's to the point now where he won't put pressure on it much. when attacked, he had a bite wound on the inner part of his leg. we took him to the vet and they gave us antibiotic and cleaned and wrapped it. it healed fine. we took him back to the vet because he was favoring his leg. they gave us an anti-inflammatory (don't have the name of it with me) for dogs. that helped a little, but we took him back for ex-rays. they showed nothing wrong. what should we do next? we can't stand seeing him hurting like this? A: You probably need to continue the therapy for a longer period of time, especially since you did notice some improvement when you did use it.
Kidney diseaseQ: I have a 16yr old beagle that was diagnosed 17 months ago with kidney disease...... she has lost interest in the hills kd food she has.... but seems to want to eat other things... table food... so not all food interest is lost...... seems to be uncomfortable lately .....and drnking more water then in the past.... are these indications that the kidney disease is getting the best of her..... what are signs that we need to look for with the progression of kidney disease...... how painful/uncomfortable with this be for her.....????? thanks sandy A: With kidney disease usually causes at various rates over time increased thirst/urination as well as eventual nausea and loss of appetite. some dogs can live for years with issue. avoid toxic stresses to her body like no distemper shots at this age; also consider home made diet for kidney disease as described in dr. |pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn which also contains good supplments for her
