Extremly itchy skin on my dog
Q: My shepard is very full of energy and life, but there are times she has to stop and scratch, she has scratced so bad she has made her teets bleed, is she not getting enough oil in her dry food or is it an allergy, because my vet told me to give her 2 benadryl daily because she is prone to ear infections. she is almost 3 years old and weighs 80 lbs.
A: It could be an allergy and adding an oil like flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily to her food could help but long term. you could try other antihistamines, which may or may not help. you may ultimately need low doses of cortisone for acute relief of the itching or consider allergy testing for what she is allergic to for best long term relief.
Shop for: antihistamine

Fleas
Q: Can i use advantage on my dog after using frontline? the frontline is not killing the fleas.
A: You can use the sentinel tablets along with the frontline.
Shop for: frontline, advantage, sentinel

Shaking??
Q: About 3 months ago i took my dog to the groomers for a bath. i have a mutt (shepard mix) about 7 years old. ever since then she constantly shakes her head. i thought maybe she had water in her ears or an ear infection but there is no smell. if it is water wouldn't it have come out already. what cold this be from?? what can i do??
A: Likely underyling allergies either inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies which causes head shaking, paw licking excessively in some cases, etc. go to vet to sort out

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
Q: Hello, my dog was just diagnosed with epi. the price for the medicine is $77 for a 4 ounce package. i looked online and found out that we can also give him a human suppliment called lipram or panzytrat as well. have you heard of anyone that has done this to treat epi on their dog? thanks.
A: The concentration of enzymes is different in the veterinary product than it is in the human product (lipram). i would not suggest making a change since your pet will probably not get the required dosage.

Smelly dog after being outside
Q: My golden smells bad after being outside. i only let her out to relive herself. i live in florida and is is very humid and hot here so it is almost as if she is sweating this odor. i had a jack russel that died recently and he never had this problem but my friends black lab does. she dosent scratch, have sores, bad breath, or anything, just this stench after being outside. i've noticed that you suggest a diet change and was wondering why you suggest the flaxseed oil and such? could this be the problem?
A: When i hear about body odor issues, etc without visually external skin lesions or ear problems, then i often suspect dietary issues or sensitivities as poor digestion, etc has been linked with all sorts of systemic problem. think of a person who is sensitive to garlic who if eats a little garlic, will exude it right through their skin. however if your dog only smells after being outside in a particular area, then perhaps she is being exposed to some sort of chemical on lawns she is allergic to or perhaps inhalent allergens which actually flax seed oil might help. but usually allergies cause some sort of itching which is why if pets not itchy, then i start with better diets, supplements, etc

Stool eating
Q: My puppy is aprox. 8 months old and eats his stools. i have never had a dog do this before. what is the cause of this. is it a lack of something in the diet?
A: Most of time we dont know and some dogs outgrow this while others continue it at varying amounts throughout life. make sure on good natural diet as well as have on good multivitamin supplement like missing link from designing health as well as prozyme from 1800petmeds
Shop for: vitamin, prozyme, 1800petmeds
