Heartworm injectionQ: I understand that the heartguard shot has been recalled, please tell me why and what does it do to a dog that has been taking it. thank you, betty bell A: There had been reported an unusually large number of adverse reaction to the proheart, so the product was withdrawn for further studies by the manufacturer.|at this point, there is no reason to believe that an animal who received the shot without incident is in any danger.
Tape wormsQ: We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. the cats are never outside. 2 of the dogs have been around a dog that very possibly has fleas and lives with 7 or so other cats. this "other" dog also likes to catch mice. our dogs have been known to eat droppings in the litter box, however, we also have corrected that with a new type of box and a gate on the room it is in so the dogs can't get to it, but the cats can. our groomer found tapeworms in one of the dogs 2 times now and both times we immediately treated all of our animals. since the last treatment we have not had our pets around this other dog. ok, now the real questions, how do they get tapeworms? what do you think we should do. A: Tapeworms are gotten from ingesting fleas that carry them or ingesting stool from pet who is shedding tapewormsegments. as long as not seeing any tape segments, i would not worry
Kennel coughQ: Is there any way to get rid of kennel cough without seeing a vet for those who can not aford to take there dog to the vet? A: You can try childrens robitussin as needed a few teaspoons at a time depending upon size of dog(1 teaspoon for small ones) can also try echinacea and goldenseal from health food store which boosts immune system as well as giving extra vitamin c in form of ester c

Flea, and heart worm controlQ: Is it ok to use both "interceptor" and "program" monthly. for example, i would use the interceptor on the first of the month and the program on the 15th of the month. i want to know if there is any harm that will come to the pet using the combination. the dog is a 5 month old heeler mix, weighing 22 lbs. frank A: It should not create any problems, but may i suggest switching to a single combination product like sentinel.

Nearly 11 year old german shepherdQ: He is healthy;other than what i thought was spinal arthritis;but i am not sure because when i called the vet's again about him being able to walk in;getting up on his own;but he never walked out ;has not walked since;4 months ago now;was told at the time i picked him up they gave him more anesthesia than they wanted to;also he was given a sedative by injection;he had a hard time recovering from the anesthesia;i still don't think he should of completely loss the use of his back legs; he was still walking when he went there; i feel like i made a big mistake letting him get xrays; the vet said he does not recall saying about too much anesthesia; went for xrays; they said he is old anyway; but i was yelled the word massive lumbo-sacral , so is this different than spinal arthritis;he is a great dog under control with any pain ;i just don't think he should of completely loss the use of his legs in a few hours; i am on my own with him now; the thing that was said to me is to call when i am ready to put him down as he is old anyway;that was it; i wanted him looked at again by another vet;but was turned down flat;i also did'nt know vets really don't like older dogs;because they say he's old anyway, alot of them are put down when healthy;also i have come to think they don't like german shepherds at least where i have been, why so much anesthesia + sedating to do xrays;it was way too much on him;he was xrayed before over 2 years ago with no problem; but they did'nt use anesthesia or a sedative on him ;he is very active or wants to be now ;limber also except for not being able to walk; i just want to know why he walked in but never walked out ;i think he was mishandled ;they were nervous about him;i have owned him since he was a pup;now i don't know what to do. thank you A: Your shephard likely had pre existing spinal disease in first place either a disc problem or a degenerative disease called degenerative myelopathy. i would see a veterinary neurologist or seek out an alternative chiropractic or acupuncture vet at www.altvetmed.com or www.theavh.org
Help in identifying wormsQ: Dear doctor, while cleaning up after my 8-month old dog, i noticed a long spaghetti-like worm in his stool. what is the difference between whipworm, roundworm and hookworms and what is the best med. for him? thanks lots!! julia A: All are different types of worms but all can cause similar signs of diarrhea or vomitingor weight loss etc. rounds and hooks can be treated with med like nemex from;1800petmeds. whips usually need panacure. also monthly heartworm meds such as interceptor can prevent all 3 worms. i suspect roundworms given age and your description
