Tape wormsQ: We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. the cats are never outside. 2 of the dogs have been around a dog that very possibly has fleas and lives with 7 or so other cats. this "other" dog also likes to catch mice. our dogs have been known to eat droppings in the litter box, however, we also have corrected that with a new type of box and a gate on the room it is in so the dogs can't get to it, but the cats can. our groomer found tapeworms in one of the dogs 2 times now and both times we immediately treated all of our animals. since the last treatment we have not had our pets around this other dog. ok, now the real questions, how do they get tapeworms? what do you think we should do. A: Tapeworms are gotten from ingesting fleas that carry them or ingesting stool from pet who is shedding tapewormsegments. as long as not seeing any tape segments, i would not worry
Shaking??Q: About 3 months ago i took my dog to the groomers for a bath. i have a mutt (shepard mix) about 7 years old. ever since then she constantly shakes her head. i thought maybe she had water in her ears or an ear infection but there is no smell. if it is water wouldn't it have come out already. what cold this be from?? what can i do?? A: Likely underyling allergies either inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies which causes head shaking, paw licking excessively in some cases, etc. go to vet to sort out
Swollen eye membraneQ: My sister-in-laws dog, jack, has an eye irratation that has caused the membrane in the eye next to the nose to swell and become red. she's been told that she can use the medicine that is used for pink eye for kids to help with this. it doesn't seem to be doing anything. we were wondering if using this medication is even a good idea since it's made for humans. what should she do? thanks. bev A: I would see vet asap for eye exam and true diagnosis ofproblem. can see article i wrote on eye care on education part of this website for some helpful suggestions as well
AbcessQ: My dog has an abcess on back, the size of a baseball. it is filled with fliud. i was advised to keep it drained, wound scabs to quickly from the inside, any suggestions on how to continue care please advise, dog is on amoxcillan 500mg 2xs a day. A: Use warm compresses for 10 minutes at a time several times daily to try and keep it open and draining. if fills back up take back to vet to have lanced and possible drain put into wound
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiencyQ: Hello, my dog was just diagnosed with epi. the price for the medicine is $77 for a 4 ounce package. i looked online and found out that we can also give him a human suppliment called lipram or panzytrat as well. have you heard of anyone that has done this to treat epi on their dog? thanks. A: The concentration of enzymes is different in the veterinary product than it is in the human product (lipram). i would not suggest making a change since your pet will probably not get the required dosage.
Chihuahua questionsQ: I recently rescued a chihuahua from the pound. he was abused and neglected and very skinny when i got him. i have had him now for almost a month and he doesnt seem to be gaining any weight. he has opened up and is beginning to learn how to love, be loved, and be a normal dog. he is playing now, probably for the first time in his life. the problem; he is approximately 3 years old and weighs 4 pounds. the vet said he is in good health, no heartworm or anything. he is utd on shots and recently neutered. i am concerned because you can see his ribs and spine. i feed him purina one. i fill a bowl and leave it out all day so he can take what he wants when he wants, and he typically eats small helpings 3 times a day. i am also worried because i have some in-laws coming to visit for 4 days next week and they have a toddler who i am afraid will make amigo nervous. is there anything i can give him to calm his nerves while they are here that will also help him to gain weight? thank you for your help. A: Two different issues. try rescue remedy from health food store to help with stress of toddler. also consider better diet like pet guard or canidae as well as flax seed oil 1/4 teaspoon added to his food in addition to prozyme from 1800petmeds to see if can help with weight
