Fear biting
Q: We have a 9 year old female black lab who was a fear biter from the time we rescued her at 1 1/2 yrs old. we worked with a behaviorist, learned her triggers and the behavior was under control until recently. she's become more agressive and territorial and last nite attacked one of our other dogs who happened to be near zoe's bone. the dog had to be rushed to the vet with numerous wounds. zoe has been in a room by herself since the attack and growl and nips at me whenever i let her out and then try to put her back in. something needs to be done asap as i have children, cats and 3 other dogs. do you think medication would help? thanks.
A: I would not rely on medications to treat this. i do not think you can risk having an aggressive dog in your house. she may have to be placed in a home where there are no children or other pets.

Weight loss
Q: Hi i have a part boxer part rotweiler and is 18 months old. he is losing a lot of weight and he eats about 50 pounds of food a week and is very hyper dog. i don't know if there is something i can get for him or what. he is also going to the bathroom fine but he is very skinny.
A: You need to have him examined by a vet and start with a stool sample to make sure no parasites. he could have a digestion problem, which your vet can diagnose by bloodwork. an excellent supplement for a case like this is one callled prozyme, which is a digestive enzyme that can assist in digestion until you have it looked at further.

Bladder stones
Q: My 3 yr old cat had a stone in his bladder. the vet hosp. had him in the hosp for 3 days giving him some medication to disolve the stone. after that he was on a type of food that continued to disolve the stone for about a month. he has to have prescription canned and dry food from now on to prevent the reocurrance of the problem. it is hill's prescription diet, feline c/d (4 lb bag - dry) and canned in a 5 1/2 oz. can. do you sell this? it seems expensive. $11 for the bag and $1/ can.
A: I'm sorry about your cat's problem. unfortunately we do not carry pet foods.

Misdiagnosis of cushings
Q: First i would like to say thank you for all of your help!!!!! this time i do not have a question but before receiving your response to my second question (you suggested an internist) i got a second opinion from another vet we used to use. he absolutely stated that based on the blood and urine tests there shows no signs of cushings at all. he believes my dog has seasonal allergies and we are trying prednisone to relieve her discomfort. if not seasonal, he thinks food or scabes (spelling) which could be accurate due to the fact that she recently spent time at a kennel. i just wanted to let people know that a second opinion is always good. i almost had to make the ultimate decision of long term debt to treat her or saying goodbye. i am glad that i spent another $100 to not have to make that decision.
A: Your very welcome. glad to be of some help to you. pass your comments etc on to 1800petmeds brass.

Scratching
Q: My dog is constantly scratching. i have try flea spray, the hartz flea and tick medicine that you put down his back and he is still doing it. i have also treated the carpets and his room.
A: You can treat the allergy symptoms with diphenhydramine (benadryl). give 1mg per lb every 8 to 12 hours.

Nearly 11 year old german shepherd
Q: He is healthy;other than what i thought was spinal arthritis;but i am not sure because when i called the vet's again about him being able to walk in;getting up on his own;but he never walked out ;has not walked since;4 months ago now;was told at the time i picked him up they gave him more anesthesia than they wanted to;also he was given a sedative by injection;he had a hard time recovering from the anesthesia;i still don't think he should of completely loss the use of his back legs; he was still walking when he went there; i feel like i made a big mistake letting him get xrays; the vet said he does not recall saying about too much anesthesia; went for xrays; they said he is old anyway; but i was yelled the word massive lumbo-sacral , so is this different than spinal arthritis;he is a great dog under control with any pain ;i just don't think he should of completely loss the use of his legs in a few hours; i am on my own with him now; the thing that was said to me is to call when i am ready to put him down as he is old anyway;that was it; i wanted him looked at again by another vet;but was turned down flat;i also did'nt know vets really don't like older dogs;because they say he's old anyway, alot of them are put down when healthy;also i have come to think they don't like german shepherds at least where i have been, why so much anesthesia + sedating to do xrays;it was way too much on him;he was xrayed before over 2 years ago with no problem; but they did'nt use anesthesia or a sedative on him ;he is very active or wants to be now ;limber also except for not being able to walk; i just want to know why he walked in but never walked out ;i think he was mishandled ;they were nervous about him;i have owned him since he was a pup;now i don't know what to do. thank you
A: Your shephard likely had pre existing spinal disease in first place either a disc problem or a degenerative disease called degenerative myelopathy. i would see a veterinary neurologist or seek out an alternative chiropractic or acupuncture vet at www.altvetmed.com or www.theavh.org

Blood on sink
Q: My one year old female cat likes to drink water from the sink. after she is done and jumps down i notice small drops of blood on the sink. what could be the problem.
A: Could be bad tooth. take to vet for oral exam

Cyclosporine drops
Q: My vet has prescribed cycolosporine drops for my peke who doesn't produce enough tears. cyclosporine is very expensive, what is the name of the over the counter medication that you recommended to the person that had the same issue with her dog? is it something you can purchase in a drug store? thank you.
A: You could try several time application of artificial tears as a source of lubrication and tears for eyes
